Lauren Camilleri and Sophia Kaplan from Sydney's Inner West set out to create a community of plant lovers delivering greens in little handmade pots throughout the city. Their efforts have grown via social media and publishing their first book Leaf Supply, with their second book about to drop it's a true testament to all they've achieved.

WHAT'S A TYPICAL DAY FOR YOU AT LEAF SUPPLY?

Each morning we get all the orders ready for delivery. Plants are potted up, botanical wares are carefully packaged and notes and address labels are handwritten. From there every day is different. It might involve a trip out to the nurseries to source plants or researching different botanical products, some marketing work like creating Instagram content and EDMs, photographing products, liaising with various people about any collaborations we have in the works, and at the moment, prepping for the launch of our second book Indoor Jungle.

HOW DID YOU GUYS MEET AND COME UP WITH THE IDEA FOR LEAF SUPPLY?

We were introduced by mutual friend, set up on a kind of plant-based blind date. That first coffee we realised we both had a similar idea for an online plant business so decided to pursue it together. After lots of planning and prepping, a year later we launched!

YOU MUST BE EXCITED ABOUT THE RELEASE OF YOUR SECOND PLANT BOOK 'INDOOR JUNGLE'?

We are so bloody lucky to have been given the opportunity to write both of our books. Indoor Jungle follows on from our first Leaf Supply with a more in depth look at the world of plant styling. We still go over the basics of plant care, and explore our favourite classic and new wave plants, but also look at how to choose your personal approach to styling and break down styling ideas room by room. The spaces we have photographed for this book are just incredible, we peek into homes, work spaces and public spaces from New York, Berlin, Amsterdam, London and back home in Sydney and Melbourne. Our interviews with the owners are warm, insightful and full of inspiration.

DO YOU HAVE ANY CRAZY STORIES FROM YOUR INTERVIEWS FROM THE BOOK, OR ANY FAVOURITES?

For all of the people we interviewed for the book we were really touched by just how much love they had for their plants. So many of them found their interactions with plants to be incredibly therapeutic and lots admitted that even plant pros kill plants too! Being more accepting of nature’s ways was a big lesson there.

WHAT'S THE MOST COMMON PLANT PROBLEM YOU'RE MOST QUESTIONED ABOUT?

Over OR under-watering seem to be the biggest issues. Our most important piece of advice is to regularly check in with your plants and always dip your finger into the soil to see how moist it is and if it’s ready to water again. All plants have different needs, and ones that also need to be adjusted as the seasons change, but generally, if the first couple of centimetres of soil has dried out, it’s time to water again.

WEIRD QUESTION BUT FEEL I HAVE TO ASK, WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE TYPE OF PLANT?

That is such a tough one but at a pinch for Lauren Swiss Cheese plant (Monstera Deliciosa) and Sophia all of the carnivorous pitcher plants (Nepenthes).

WHAT'S BEEN THE MOST REWARDING PART OF THE LEAF SUPPLY JOURNEY SO FAR?

Building peoples confidence with plants is super rewarding. We were so surprised at the beginning to learn just how many people are scared of owning plants for fear of killing them. We hope we have given people who were interested the tools and confidence to start their love affair with plants. And the ability to accept that not every plant makes it, and that’s okay too.

WE'RE STOKED TO BE BRINGING YOU GUYS TO THIRROUL, TELL US MORE ABOUT WHAT WE CAN EXPECT FROM YOUR KOKEDAMA WORKSHOP WITH NOEL & GLADYS?

We’re super excited to come to your beautiful store! For our workshop we’ll be chatting through some basic plant care and be ready to answer any plant questions. We'll then run through a demonstration of how to make a moss wrapped Kokedama plant before assisting you as you make your own. Lauren’s ceramicist dad is kindly making some beautiful footed bowls to house your Kokedama which you get to take home. We’ll then take a little peek at our new book and give away copies for everyone to take home as well! Can’t wait to meet everyone and chat plants!
