CINDY HSU ZELL, LOS ANGELES USA

Invigorating the feel-good part of people is one of the main inspirations behind Cindy’s unique jewellery line, WKNDLA. The intriguing shapes make for conversation starters and storytellers, embodying all that is good and wrapping it up with handmade love in 14k gold. Cindy takes the diverse nature of California she adores to influence the quirky twisting turns of her jewellery; the perfect example of doing what you love on weekends until it becomes what you do everyday.

FOR OUR AUDIENCE TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR JEWELLERY LINE WKNDLA?

My name is Cindy and I started WKNDLA in 2014 on the weekends in Los Angeles (this inspired the name). I want to create pieces that serve as storytellers and conversation starters while evoking a unique point of view. My hope is that they give the wearer the confidence to tell their story, encouragement to form new connections, and a reminder that we’re better together.

WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE WKNDLA?

Before I started WKNDLA I made large-scale window installations and interior displays for corporate retail. I had the opportunity to work with a lot of materials in some interesting ways, such as creating a chandelier made out of 10,000 zip ties and weaving baskets out of garden hose. It taught me a lot about time management and problem solving which I apply in my own business every day.

'JEWELLERY THAT MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD, DOES GOOD' - WE JUST LOVE THAT STATEMENT, CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THE MEANING BEHIND IT?

I want my jewellery to make you feel great inside and out – physically, every piece is lightweight and comfortable for all-day wear and are made out of 14k gold-filled and sterling silver which are generally hypoallergenic. They are ethically produced with sustainability practices in mind and proudly made by hand each step of the way. On a broader level, a portion of sales are donated to causes that help create a kinder, more sustainable future for us all.

YOUR WORK OFTEN FEATURES UNIQUE AND ORGANIC SHAPES, WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION FROM FOR EACH COLLECTION?

My approach to jewellery comes from a background in sculpture and animation. Behind every season-less collection is a love for art in all forms and inspiration that draws upon nature, movement, history, mythology, and everyday moments.

IT SEEMS THESE SHAPES ARE ALSO REFLECTED THROUGHOUT YOUR HOME, THROUGH TEXTILES TO ART - CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THAT?

We like to keep things simple but with special touches of texture, art, and plants. I love incorporating nature and abstract art into our home!

RECENTLY YOU WERE INTERVIEWED FOR APARTMENT THERAPY AND WE NOTICED CERAMICS FROM PUBLIC HOLIDAY, ONE OF OUR FAVOURITE AUSTRALIAN POTTERS. WE'D LOVE TO KNOW HOW YOU BOTH CAME TO KNOW EACH OTHER?

We found each other through Instagram! The platform has introduced me to so many great friends, it is such an easy way to connect with like-minded makers through the visuals we share on a daily basis.

WHAT DO YOUR DAYS LOOK LIKE AS AN ARTIST LIVING IN THE HEART OF LOS ANGELES?

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, and there’s just so much to love about it. You can find anything within an hour’s drive, from mountains to beaches, to literally any kind of food you’re craving. I love that it’s so diverse and yet there’s a very universally relaxed atmosphere. There’s something for everyone here, and you really can’t beat the sunshine. I spend most of my week soldering inside the studio, but make sure to explore on the weekends!
